Postpartum Update: Week 1

I loved doing the weekly pregnancy updates so much that I decided to continue it with a weekly postpartum update.  This one is a little late but we’ve been a bit busy in this house. :)  As the weeks go on, I’ll make these updates monthly instead.

How Am I Feeling?: The first 3 days after Little Fella’s birth were the toughest.  I was sore from having torn in 3 places and sore from just having given birth to a big baby.  On Wednesday, I started to feel much better and more like myself than I have in months.  Scratch that, actually over a year ago(last time I felt like myself was last March, pre-miscarriage and 2nd pregnancy).

39 Weeks Pregnant

1 Week Postpartum – Sorry about the mess in the background :)  My little guy was born with a full head of hair and I love it!

How Have I Changed?: I got home from the hospital weighing only 8 lbs less than my pregnancy weight.  I had so much swelling and still looked about 7 months pregnant.  One week postpartum and I am now down 22 lbs.   I am still dealing with some swelling but I know that will go away in time.  I gained 35 lbs while pregnant with 5 of those being in the last couple of days.  Darn swelling!!!  I started this pregnancy up about 12 lbs from my ideal weight because of miscarriage/surgery so I have about 25 lbs to go to reach my goal weight.  I know I will get there, just going to take it one day at a time.

Breastfeeding: I didn’t know what to expect and I didn’t set any goals for myself when it came to breastfeeding.  I told myself that I would take it one day at a time and try not to get too frustrated.  Well, the first day in the hospital went well but by the time we got home on Sunday afternoon, all hell had broken loose.  Little Fella wouldn’t latch but was starving and my milk wasn’t coming in.  Not a good combo so the husband and I decided to start supplementing.  We struggled through every feeding till Friday morning when I had an appointment with the lactation consultant.  As soon as we got in the room, Little Fella decided to show off and immediately latch on.  Ughhh.  We are still working on breastfeeding together but we are also still supplementing.  I was upset that we had to supplement at first, but when it comes down to it, I just want Little Fella to eat and grow.  At the Friday appointment, he was already back up to his birth weight after dropping to 7 lbs 15 ounces at the hospital.  Little Fella is also quite the eater, we are up to 4 ounces every 3 hours, he definitely takes after his parents.

Workouts: The doctor told me to walk slowly this week each day and I have achieved that goal!  By 2 weeks postpartum, I am allowed to speed walk and at 6 weeks, I am allowed to start running.  I am going to stick with his guidelines so I know I am fully recovered and not risking any injury.  I do have the NYC Marathon in November to train for! :)

Eats: Fruit, veggies and anything healthy would make me gag through my whole pregnancy.  Cheese and starches were my best friends.  As soon as Little Fella was born, that all changed and I am back eating salads, watermelon, strawberries and basically anything healthy I can get my hands on.  Maybe this will help get the weight off too.

Life in the Run Bake Race Household:  Life in our house is now totally different but a happy different.  Little Fella is dictating the schedule and my husband and I take turns getting up at night.    We’ve had a handful of diaper explosions, been peed on many times and are totally sleep deprived.  Starting on Monday, husband has to go back to work so I am on my own.  This could get interesting. :)

Can’t wait to see what kind of changes week 2 brings….

Way to go!! It sounds like things are going really well!

My little one had a full head of hair at birth, and now almost 13 months later) her hair is almost as long as mine ;) so cute!

BF is hard! It takes a while to get the hang of it. I was told by a fabulous lac consultant that priority number one is to feed your baby. Then keep up your supply. And then work on technique. I thought that was good advice. Especially when nursing is so challenging at first.. I think you are doing a great job! And you are glowing ;)

Can’t wait to hear more about life with baby Lucas!

  2. Aww, sending lots of good thoughts and well wishes your way. I hope the nursing gets easier. If it’s any consolation, Miles did the same thing. He would eat so well every time I went to the BF support group and then I’d spend 5 days praying for the next session so I could ask questions. I think babies just like to show off in public.

  3. so very glad to hear that you guys are enjoying your new life as a family of 3! it truly is wonderful isnt it!! :)

  4. Sounds like things are going great! L is gorgeous and hairy babies are the best :) Glad he’s eating well now! And great work on the healthy eating- I think it took me about 4-5 weeks for the switch to flip!

I love this post! It is SO helpful to read about what it’s really like to be a mom! You look fantastic, by the way. So so happy. Baby is so cute! I love his full head of hair too! You worked out so much during the pregnancy, you will bounce back fast, I’m sure. Good luck with the breastfeeding. I hear it is a little stressful til you can get the hang of it. Hoping this week get easier and easier! Enjoy your time with the little guy!
